Hokusai Hidden in Uraga
~An Immersive Town Gallery~
Hokusai, the ukiyo-e artist known worldwide, stayed in Uraga between 1834 and 1836. In the latter half of his stay, it is known that he took shelter at Shinpukuji Temple, located a short distance from the center of Uraga.
At that time, Uraga was a bustling port town — the maritime gateway to Edo — where ships, people, and goods from across the country constantly passed through. How did Hokusai view the sea and ships, the people coming and going, and the distant form of Mount Fuji from this town?
"Hokusai, Hidden in Uraga. ~Immersive Townscape Gallery~" is an event that invites you to walk through the streets of Uraga where Hokusai once took refuge, view ukiyo-e prints, try woodblock printing, and experience the power of the waves.
Historic venues across Uraga — including old merchant houses with roots in the dried sardine wholesale trade and ancient temples — become spaces for encountering Hokusai's works and engaging in hands-on activities.
Come and walk through this port town, and encounter the landscapes that Hokusai may have witnessed.

Main Venue and Activity Highlights
Venue 1
Your journey through Hokusai's Uraga begins in an old merchant house that preserves the atmosphere of a bygone era.
The Traditional House of Wine Cellar Miyamasa is a relocated building that once served as a dried sardine wholesaler in Uraga. While the Edo-period atmosphere remains, the fittings, shutters, and doors also carry the charm of the Meiji and Taisho eras.
In his later years, Hokusai is said to have stayed in Uraga, relying on what was believed to be his mother's family — a shipping merchant house — and may have sought lodging at dried sardine wholesalers such as this one. Here in this traditional house, imagine Hokusai living among the merchants of that era.

Uncover the secrets of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in a building that once flourished as a dried sardine wholesaler.
Miso Workshop Kobo Rokubei preserves the building of the Kobo family, who ran a dried sardine wholesale business in Uraga during the Edo period. In this space that still carries the atmosphere of the past, let your imagination wander to the vibrant life of the port town of Uraga and the era in which Hokusai lived.
A single ukiyo-e print is not completed by the artist alone. The process involves the artist who draws the original composition, the carver who cuts the woodblocks, and the printer who applies the colors to paper. It is through the overlapping skills and efforts of each craftsperson that a vivid work is brought to life.
At this venue, the structure of ukiyo-e woodblock printing is presented through a large layered panel display. See for yourself the technique of woodblock printing — where a separate block is used for each color, layered one by one.

Venue 4
All of Hokusai's world, together in one place.
The Uraga Renga Dock Utilization Center displays all 46 works from "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" and all 10 works from "A Thousand Pictures of the Sea." Enjoy Hokusai's rich and varied world — Mount Fuji, the sea, ships, waves, and people living across the land — at a leisurely pace.
The prints on display are the work of Takahashi Kobo, a workshop with centuries of heritage that faithfully preserves the traditional techniques of the Edo period. Each work is carefully printed by hand using the craft of Edo woodblock printing — designated as a Traditional Craft by the Japanese government — and the vivid colors brought back to life through these time-honored techniques are one of the greatest draws of the collection.
Among the works in "A Thousand Pictures of the Sea" is "Fishing at Uraga in Sagami Province," which depicts the Tomyodo lighthouse that still stands in Uraga today. View it alongside the current landscape of Uraga, and reflect on the town that Hokusai once saw.
*The exhibition features ukiyo-e reproduction prints by Edo woodblock print maker Takahashi Kobo.

Tomyodo: a guardian that has watched over the seas of Uraga for centuries.
Tomyodo Lighthouse was built during the Edo period to serve as a beacon for ships entering and leaving Uraga. Hokusai depicted this lighthouse and the surrounding sea in "Fishing at Uraga in Sagami Province," one of the works in his "A Thousand Pictures of the Sea" series.
After viewing the artwork at the Uraga Renga Dock Utilization Center, visit the actual Tomyodo. We recommend comparing the seascape Hokusai once painted with the view of the Uraga sea as it looks today.
*Not a main event venue. Allow approximately 1 hour (round trip on foot from Venue 3, Tofukuji Temple) if you plan to visit.
